The Drowsy Chaperone: Kitty (2006) Gregg Barnes’ costume rendering for the character Kitty in ‘Message from a Nightingale’ in The Drowsy Chaperone. Affectionately dubbed the Chinese monster, Kitty’s costume uses multiple craft and sewing construction techniques. Back view, the rigid upper skirt pannier is made from polyethylene sheeting and wired in piano wire. The sleeve embroidery is a combination of purchased fusible appliqués and custom machine work while the epaulette is gold-leafed paper mache. The feathers on Kitty’s headdress detach for shipping and the central pagoda-shape accordions down as well.
